STEPS [SOL LEWITT SERIES]
STEPS [SOL LEWITT SERIES]
THE IDEA + THE SCORE
On the left wall of Wall Drawing #1211 at MASS MoCA, there is a written key and map detailing the larger piece (image 1). I focused on the first 24 squares (image 2).
The piece runs around 15 minutes and is split into three movements:
The first movement runs around seven minutes, mapping the top line of the image below to four different possible chord progressions in 4. The arpeggios are in 3 for a delayed canon effect.
The second maps the second and third rows to rhythms. Each measure is in 1O/8.
The third is in 4 and generates a new chord progression in Ab each time the code is run.
THE CODE
THE MUSIC
/* Steps is a sonic interpretation of Sol LeWitt’s Wall Drawing #1211 at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art coded in SuperCollider. This is the second piece in a series creating music with LeWitt’s work as a graphic score. */
Premiered at the Ely Center for Contemporary Art in New Haven, CT, on October 25, 2O25. It was performed alongside works by Weston Olencki and the duo Formant.
